GWCC Honors
As of January 2007, there are
Two Levels of Honors at GWCC, the Honors Experience and The Honors Program.
The Honors Experience
The Honors Experience is the same Honors that GWCC has had all along. It involves the student qualifying, and then either converting a class to an Honors (HO) class by doing a special project or taking HUM 190 (1 credit).
For a student who does not yet know whether he/she wishes to commit to the full Honors Program, the Honors Experience is a wonderful option. It allows the following advantages the GWCC Honors student has always received:
Advantages, Eligibility and Requirements in the Honors Experience
- HO designation on transcript next to individual course(s)
- Fee Waiver awarded
| Credits Enrolled |
Fee Waiver |
| 12 or more |
$325 |
| 9 - 11 |
$244 |
| 6 - 8 |
$163 |
| 3 - 5 |
$81 |
- An opportunity to qualify for scholarships offered in the Spring Semester
It also has the same eligibility requirements it has always had:
- Completion of 12 credit hours in the MCCD, with a GPA of 3.25 or higher, or be a President’s Scholarship recipient
- Maintain a GPA of 3.25 to remain an Honors student
Once you are accepted into the GWCC Honors Experience, you can fulfill the requirements in one of two ways:
- Register for the one credit HUM190 Honors Forum Lecture Series course (1 credit)
- Convert a current class into an Honors Class by doing a special project. Requires the submittal of a GWCC Honors Project form (no additional credit)
Additionally, you will need to maintain a GPA of 3.25 or higher
The Honors Program
Some students will wish more than an Honors Experience. For these students, the Honors Program is an option.
Advantages, Eligibility and Requirements in the Honors Program
Advantages to being in the Honors Program include:
- Same as Honors Experience, plus
- Indication on transcript that the student is a Graduate of the GWCC Honors Program
- An Honors Program cord at commencement
In order to graduate from the Honors Program, students will:
- Complete 12 or more hours of honors coursework
- Maintain a GPA of 3.25
- Receive a “B” or better in all Honors credits
- Demonstrate evidence of leadership, service or contribution to the college or community
Criteria for Honors Projects
Students will still be able to convert a class into an Honors class by doing an additional project in the class. The following criteria should be met in all Honors projects
- Academic rigor worthy of the number of credits awarded (a project in a 3-credit course needs to be more rigorous than that in a 1-credit course)
Projects can still be varied (original work, experiential work, etc), however
- Projects will include research, writing (using whatever style is appropriate to the academic field studied), and presentation components
- Research (use of professional or academic sources)
- Writing (paraphrase, citation, bibliography)
- Presentation (verbal component in front of an audience)
To enroll in GWCC Honors, you must fulfill the following:
- Meet the following acceptance criteria:
- Have completed at least 12 MCCD college credit hours or more and
- Have a GPA of 3.25 or higher
- Complete the Honors Program and Project Contract
- Obtain needed signatures
- Submit signed applications to Honors Program Coordinator
Deadline for submitting applications
