Project Responsibilities:
- Develop a creative college prep thematic 6-week summer program curriculum that includes English, science, math through calculus, technology, foreign language, and study skills.
- Develop high school appropriate curriculum materials and associated lessons.
Knowledge and Abilities:
- Current educational theories that may be used to guide curriculum development
- High School and/or Community College curriculum
- Arizona State learning standards
- Thematic teaching methods
- Ability to use appropriate educational approaches for instruction, apply appropriate learning theory and techniques, and work as part of a team
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Knowledge or experience using Word, Access, Publisher, Internet, and e-mail
- Ability to manage time and priorities in a dynamic learning environment
Qualifications:
- Baccalaureate Degree (or higher) in Education (or related experience)
- Teaching certification for secondary education or community college
- Experience teaching high school students and/or developing curriculum in English,science, social science and/or math
- Excellence in English grammar and composition

Summer Instructors
Project Responsibilities
This summer's Upward Bound Project instructors will work with about 35 high school students from North High School during a 6-week summer program at GateWay Community College. Instructors will provide academic and personal support/instruction that will help students develop the skills and motivation to succeed in high school and will result in post secondary educational success.
Percent of Time/Funding Source:
The summer program will run from the end of May to the beginning of July. The first two weeks being an instructor/tutor training period. Instructors will work up to eight hours per week.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of current techniques and procedures used in the design, development, and delivery of instruction. Knowledge of instructional methods, materials, and instruments; instructional application of new technologies, multidisciplinary, thematic instructional approaches. Ability to design and implement integrated classroom strategies for diverse student groups; use tools of technology in instructional process; establish rapport with students; individualize instruction based on student needs; work effectively with students in large/small groups; implement innovative instructional methodology; make effective oral and written presentations; and establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing duties.
Training and Experience:
Secondary Teaching and or Community College certificate is required. Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities including a degree in Education, Instructional Design, Educational Technology, and academic discipline or related field and/or applied experience in the uses of new technologies, including computers, for instruction and/or implementing programs for "at risk" high school students.
Examples of Project Duties:
Plans, implements, and evaluates classroom based learning activities for "at-risk" high school students; uses technology tools, attend field trips, oversees the work of tutors, maintains required records accurately; coordinates all activities with the Curriculum Designer and performs related duties as required.

Summer Tutors/Mentors
These positions post in April.
Four tutors are hired in the summer for 8-10 hrs a week for 6-7 weeks. One tutor for each subject area.
Responsibilities:
The Upward Bound Summer Program services 50 students from North High School.
Tutors will assist students in the comprehension of subject matter individually, in small groups, and in a classroom setting.
Time:
Tutoring will be Monday - Thursday
Up to 10 hours a week.
Position available May-July.
Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of high school academic content in one or more areas of math through calculus, science or English; techniques for working collaboratively; familiar with barriers faced by students in circumstances like those of first generation/low income participants.
Training and Experience:
Any combination of education training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. An example of this would be current enrollment in a community college program and completion of a training program for tutoring.
Examples of Project Duties:
Provides one-to-one and small group tutoring for the course they are assigned and the free tutoring hour. Assist instructor with course materials and preparation.
