Summer
The Summer Program is for 6 weeks at GateWay Community College from the end of May to the beginning of July. Classes are Mondays through Thursdays 8:30am - 5:00pm. Students receive breakfast and lunch with a snack everyday.
Curriculum:
Students take classes in mathematics through calculus, science through physics, English composition and literature, foreign language, and technology. All subject areas are wrapped around a theme, which is focused on the book or novel. Having a theme is not only fun, but adds creativity to subject areas. The summer program is designed to give students a college experience by being on a college campus for 6 weeks and visiting other campuses in and out of state.
College Visitation Trip:
Students visit and tour a state University and have a "college experience" staying in the dorms and eating in the cafeteria. We also visit area cultural sights while staying at the University. The trip changes each year. Within a four-year cycle, all state Arizona Universities are visited as well as trips to California to visit out of state colleges.
Enrichment:
Students are also attending intensive enrichment sessions in the morning with the Program Advisors and Director to focus on academic skills, college information, and personal wellness.
Credit:
Students receive .5 high school elective credit for passing with a "C" average or better in all areas for each Summer Program they participate in. If a student attends all 4 summers they will have a total of 2 elective credits.
Stipend:
Students also receive $60 for participation in the summer program. They must have excellent attendance and at least a "C" average in all courses.
