What is Upward Bound?
Upward Bound is a college preparatory program for high school students--Students Born For Greatness! GateWay's Upward Bound program has been in existence since 1999. It is one of the TRIO programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education and offers academic, personal, and social support to high school students through their entrance into postsecondary education. Upward Bound is a motivational college preparatory program assisting first generation/low income students with their high school graduation, and preparation for postsecondary education. Upward Bound currently serves North High School.

Events
Cultural Enrichments
Students also attend one cultural enrichment event each semester. These are held in the evening or on Saturdays. The following are a few examples:
- The Arizona Science Center
- The Phoenix Symphony
- Theater performances at the Orpheum and Gammage Auditorium
- Visits to Sedona
- The Heard Museum
Community Service
Students also participate in community service at least once a semester to prepare for scholarship opportunities:
- Students can work at St. Vincent De Paul sorting donations, feeding and serving the needy, and creating food boxes.
- They have also worked at South Mountain cleaning the park and trails.
Community Service hours are important for scholarship applications and giving back to the world at large. The students have an opportunity to attend once a semester.
Summer Orientation
The Summer Program kicks off with an orientation for the students and parents/guardians. The schedule, rules, and curriculum are discussed and questions are answered about the summer. This is scheduled for May.
Parent Institute
This is a time for parents/guardians to come to GateWay Community College to take workshops on what is scheduled for their son/daughter in the coming years or months. Preparing for college is a family event and this is a special time for the parents to learn, discuss, and share their feelings and ideas with the presenters and with each other. This is scheduled for Spring.
Senior Financial Aid Day
This is an evening when parents/guardians and students come to GateWay Community College and complete the FAFSA form and learn about financial aid. The Director of Financial Assistance at GateWay Community College gives a presentation on the various forms of financial aid and goes step-by-step through the FAFSA form on the Web with each family. This is scheduled for January.
