Tutoring

Tutoring is offered to students based upon the following:

  • It is free to all GateWay Community College students, for those courses in which they are currently enrolled.
  • It is available in one-on-one, or in group settings.
  • Students are allotted time up to one hour in length, per appointment.
  • Students can make one appointment, per class, at a time.

Tutoring offers students an opportunity to engage in the following learning activities:

  • Engage in dialogue with a tutor on a one-on-one basis.
  • Discuss, resolve, and understand specific course concepts and information.
  • Think about and use new concepts, ideas, and skills.
  • Develop strategies for success in class(es).

Drop-In Math Tutoring:

Math tutoring is now available without an appointment.

       Monday - Thursday:  10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

                                        3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Tutors

Learning Center tutors are undergraduate or graduate students, instructors, and professionals who have extensive course work or degrees in the subjects in which they tutor and have received training in how to be effective tutors.

Study and Learning Skills

Let the Learning Center help you study smarter, not harder!!

To learn how to study more efficiently, meet one-on-one with a learning specialist who will help you in the following areas:

  • Evaluate current study habits and time management skills.
  • Develop strategies to improve your current study skills.
  • Learn to effectively read textbooks, organize study time, and take effective notes.
  • Develop test preparation and test-taking strategies.
  • Discover your natural learning preferences.

Computer-Based Learning and Other Resources

The Learning Center operates two computer labs for student use:

  • Room MA1240, in the Main Building.
  • Room CH2121, in the Center for Health and Career Education.

These labs offer educational software that supplements textbooks or supports classroom work. Educational software is available in, but not limited to, math, biology, nutrition, medical terminology, Spanish, psychology,  reading, writing skills, nursing, physics, ESL, English, chemistry, spelling, radiology, biology, respiratory care, ultrasound, and facility management.

In addition, these labs offer the following resources:

  • Internet connectivity for class research, projects, and E-mail.
  • Wireless access -  MA1240 now has 24 laptops  available for student use. (Or bring your own laptop!)
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.

Other Learning Resources

In addition to educational software, the Learning Center has books, videos, and audio tapes that augment your classroom learning and are available for use in the Multimedia Room. Stop by the Learning Center to discover what is available.

Of particular use to students in Anatomy and Physiology are the anatomical models available for study in the Learning Center.  Microscopes and slides are also available for students taking various biology courses.
