Disability Resources
Who determines appropriate accommodations for students?
The Disability Resource Service (DRS) provides assistance to our students who have documented disabilities. We assist in the development of their academic plans and provide reasonable accommodations.
Do all students with disabilities need to register with the DRS office?
No, it is likely that many students with disabilities have chosen not to be registered with DRS or they may not have met the eligibility criteria for services.
Each applicant with a disability must meet MCCCD-admissions requirements, or be enrolled as an MCCCD student, and must provide DRS with required documentation verifying the nature and extent of the disability prior to receiving any accommodation. The disability services office coordinator is responsible for evaluating documentation and determining accommodation eligibility.
Does an instructor have the right to know what type of disability a student has if an accommodation is requested?
No. A student does not have to inform the faculty member about their disability, but only the needed accommodations. DRS cannot give details about the disability, unless the student has signed a written consent form, but DRS can inform the instructor if the student has a documented disability and if the academic adjustment requested is appropriate. The student may disclose their disability to the instructor. Instructors are then obligated to maintain confidentiality regarding the student's disability.
