Crime Prevention Tips

Past experience has shown that most of the crime at GWCC occurs because the victim somehow provides the perpetrator with an opportunity to commit the crime. Therefore, to lessen the chance of becoming a victim at GateWay, it's important that you read and practice the following crime prevention tips:

  • Avoid enticing a thief to take or break into your motor vehicle. After parking, remove the ignition key, close all vehicle windows and remove any item of value that can be seen from outside the vehicle.
  • Be alert to possible trouble. Notify College Safety when suspicious person(s) or suspicious activity is observed anywhere on campus.
  • Maintain control of your handbag, text books and other property. The loss or theft of a handbag and/or text book occurs more often in the cafeteria or a classroom. Protect your handbag by placing it on your lap while eating and maintain sight of your books at all times.
  • Place some form of identification, such as your initials and/or a number, on the inside seam of any page in your text book(s). Keep a record of the page number and identifying mark(s). If the book is stolen or lost, stop by the College Safety Building and report the incident. Then, notify the bookstore of the loss and provide them with the exact title and specific details of the identifying mark in the book and its specific location. If someone attempts to sell back the book, the bookstore will hold the book and notify College Safety.
  • Lock the door when leaving your office. A percentage of the thefts reported to College Safety occur because the office door was left open for a short period of time.
