College Safety
The College Safety Department (CSD) is housed in the College Safety Building located between the Instructional and Center for Health Careers Education buildings and
is in operation 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The telephone number is (602) 286-8911 (on campus extension number 6-8911).
The primary role of the department is to provide assistance and protection of people on campus, protection of District and personal property, traffic control, visitor assistance, lost and found property, loss prevention, loss reporting, identification of safety hazards and training and orientation of employees and students.
CSD maintains a working relationship with the Phoenix Police Department and will request assistance as needed. GWCC has certified and non-certified College Safety
Officers patrolling our campus. Certified officers are empowered with the authority to make arrests.
Securty of and Access to College Facilities
GWCC issues enrolled students identification cards and encourages them to carry the cards while on campus. The identification card identifies the bearer as a member of
the college community.
The campus is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.—Saturday from 6:30 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. The college is closed on Sunday. During the summer months (mid May—early August), the college is open Monday through Thursday from 6:30 a.m.
to 10:00 p.m. The college is closed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. GWCC does not maintain off campus facilities for recognized student organizations.
Reporting Crime and Other Emergencies
Students, employees, and others are encouraged to report all criminal activity and emergencies that occur on campus. A report may be filed with a College Safety Officer or by calling telephone number (602) 286-8911, on-campus extension 6-8911. In emergency situations requiring the response of police, fire, or medical assistance, 9-1-1 may be called first, followed by an immediate notification to College Safety at (602) 286-8911. Reports of a past crime or incident may be made in person or by telephone to the following:

- Phoenix Police Department:
In person at your local precinct or call telephone number (602) 262-6151.
Responding to Criminal Activity and Emergencies
A College Safety Officer and, if necessary, a Phoenix Police Officer will respond to each report of criminal activity. The local Fire Department will respond to reports
of fire or medical emergencies.
The college will respond administratively if a sexual assault or other criminal offense involves a student or employee as the alleged offender. Students and employees are subject to applicable college and governing board policies and disciplinary procedures, including policies prohibiting sexual harassment. Sanctions may include suspension or expulsion for student offenders, or termination of employment for employees. Victims may commence a disciplinary action by
submitting a written, signed statement detailing the incident to the Dean of Student Services. Both the accuser and accused are entitled to have others present during the hearing, and in the case of sexual assault, to be both
informed of the outcome.
Crime Awareness and Prevention Programs
Crime Statistics And Information: Statistics on specific crimes, collated in accordance to the guidelines established under Title II of Public Law 101-542 known as the “Campus Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990,” and GWCC security policies are reported annually in the college “Safety On Campus” brochure. The information is also available on the web at students.gatewaycc.edu/Resources/CollegeSafety/CampusCrimeStatistics.htm.
The “Safety On Campus” brochure is distributed to all current students and employees, and to any applicant for enrollment or employment. A copy will be made available to anyone, upon request to the Director of College Safety at telephone number (602) 286-8353.
College Safety publishes weekly information on criminal activity that occurs on campus. The information is sent to all departments via electronic mail and posted in the College Safety Office.
Weapons:
The possession or use of firearms on campus is strictly forbidden. All weapons, regardless of type, are prohibited by MCCCD and/or State and local law.
Escorts:
Escorts are available to students, faculty and staff. A request may be made to College Safety on extension 6-8911. An officer will respond and accompany you
to your vehicle.
Motor Vehicle
Registration: All students and employees of the college who operate a motor vehicle on campus are required to register their vehicle with the College Safety Department. A parking decal will be issued for each registered vehicle and should be placed on the lower left side of the front windshield. There is no charge for this service.
Assistance To Disabled Motor Vehicles:
Reasonable assistance will be provided to drivers who lock their keys inside of their vehicles and/or whose auto is disabled on campus.
Presentations/Orientations:
Members of the College Safety Department are available to give presentations covering various topics related to safety on and off campus and for class orientations. They are available to present to any college department or group
of students on campus. The orientation and talks are designed to educate members of the college community about the Department, safety, and various techniques that can be used to prevent crime.
Illicit Drugs and Alcohol Possession Policy
MCCCD supports the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989, Public Law
101-226, and complies with State Laws pertaining to controlled substances, including alcohol. The possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages in any
premises owned and/or leased/rented by the District for approved educational purposes is prohibited.
